2026 WLHS conference: "Labor and Democracy in the Age of Authoritarianism"

Join the Wisconsin Labor History Society for our conference and annual meeting on Saturday, May 9th at 8:30 AM atIron Workers Local 8in Milwaukee. Keynoting our event is John Nichols, Executive Editor of The Nation magazine and Associate Editor of the Cap Times in Madison, known for his coverage and analysis of the Act 10 crisis. Nichols has written, cowritten, or edited over a dozen books on topics ranging from histories of American socialism and the Democratic Party to analyses of US and global media systems. His latest, cowritten with Senator Bernie Sanders, is theNew York TimesbestsellerIt's OK to Be Angry About Capitalism(Penguin Random House, 2024).

WLHS is also pleased to welcome Todd Dahlstrom, Organizing and Growth Director of the Minnesota AFL-CIO. Director Dahlstrom will talk about the Minnesota labor movement's participation in the Minneapolis resistance to ICE. Todd has worked in the Minnesota labor movement for many years, including organizing 95% of of the private security force in the Twin Cities area with two historic strikes.

The conference will also feature a panel on how workers and their unions are resisting and protecting their members from ICE, featuring MALC Immigrant Rights Committee chair Julissa Velazquez, WFNHP Local 5000 Vice-President Gavin Rice, andEmilio De Torreof the Milwaukee Turners, moderated byJosé Ramírezof Laborers Local 113. The conference willfeature a second panel on how teachers and their unions foster democracy and push back on authoritarianism, including AFT-Wisconsin president and historianJon Shelton,MTEA member and historian Jim Nelsen,and MTEA member and activistLayli McLaughlin, moderated byDon Taylorof the UW-Madison School for Workers.

 

The conference will also include a luncheon, with time to visit with friendly and like-minded people. The luncheon will also include an awards ceremony, where the winners of the annual Kenneth A. Germanson High School Essay Contest and the WLHS Lifetime Achievement Award winner will be honored.

 

Upon the conclusion of the conference program, the annual meeting will begin, where WLHS members elect board members, review reports, and conduct other business.
