About this event
In the first flushes of the COVID-19 pandemic, Iva toils away in a Bulgarian clothing factory, working under inhumane conditions. With cases rising in Sofia, employees are already required to wear a mask at work, but when Iva starts to feel under the weather, she cannot afford to miss a day of pay. Instead, she takes some medicine and returns to the factory floor. But when her persistent cough turns out to be the town’s official first case of COVID, she faces cold-hearted consequences. Condemned by her friends and colleagues, Iva becomes a social pariah, blamed for the town’s rising death count. Even her wannabe influencer son, Misho, suffers the consequences of the town’s misplaced wrath. Featuring an understated yet powerful central performance from Gergana Pletnyova as Iva, acclaimed filmmaker Stephan Komandarev’s (BLAGA’S LESSONS, AFI European Union Film Showcase 2023) searing anti-capitalist, social-realist drama premiered at the Venice Film Festival. Official Selection, 2025 Venice Film Festival.
