About this event
Joe Hill, a Swedish immigrant born Joel Häaglund, after arriving inAmerica worked as an itinerant laborer, songwriter, and member of the Industrial Workers of the World (sometimes called the Wobblies). His life ended when he was executed by firing squad in Salt Lake City, UT on November 19, 1915, following his trial for murder and a guilty verdict.
Joe Hill has been the subject of several books and innumerable stories of his life and death. Songs about him, and written by him, have been performed around the world. One song, "I Dreamed I Saw Joe Hill Last Night," was written ten years after his death and was recorded by Paul Robeson and Joan Baez, among others. The circumstances surrounding his trial have been debated for more than a hundred years, and he is remembered internationally as "the man who never died."
