A supermajority of game developers behind the popular digital game Magic: The Gathering Arena has announced their intent to form a union with the Communications Workers of America (CWA), also marking the first unionization effort at Hasbro subsidiary Wizards of the Coast, a popular digital and tabletop studio based in Washington State, most known for developing Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons.
In a statement on their web site, the new United Wizards Of The Coast union says “We’ve shown that we have overwhelming support from the Arena team and believe that the Magic community will be enthusiastic about this announcement. We hope that leadership will choose to engage with our efforts in good faith and voluntarily recognize our union. From there, we’ll begin our collective bargaining for better treatment and working conditions for the people behind Arena.”
“This is a massive moment for the Arena team, and we’re thrilled to embark on this journey with you all,” the statement continues. “Our demands aim to preserve our rights and wellbeing as workers. This is a step forward not just for the Arena team, but the gaming industry as a whole. We’re demonstrating that a phenomenal team of game makers can come together to create something truly magical.”
