The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette will continue publishing after its owners, Block Communications, agreed to sell the paper to the nonprofit Venetoulis Institute for Local Journalism, which also owns the Baltimore Banner.
The deal, expected to take effect May 4, averts a planned shutdown triggered by a legal dispute over restoring workers’ healthcare benefits. While the sale secures the future of the historic paper — and the jobs of its unionized workforce — The NewsGuild-CWA expressed concern that new management may cut jobs and fail to honor the union contract.
